Minister Sonya Hosey

Minister Sonya Hosey is a wife of 36 years, mother of two adult children, and an owner of the cutest Chihuahua on the planet.
Sonya’s bio reflects human abilities, accomplishments, gifts, opportunities, and God-given assignments through the Grace of God. She is an ordained clergy who humbly serves under Lead Pastor DeChard Freeman of Abundant Life Church in Pflugerville, TX.
She is a kingdom-minded, transformational leader and visionary, and she believes in the importance of community engagement. She is Board Certified Christian Counselor, trained in Mental Health First Aid, mental health trainer from a biblical perspective, and a grants consultant/writer. Sonya is the Founder and Visionary of Iron Sharpens Iron – 4My Sisters and She Speaks Wellness Network, inspiring and empowering African American women to optimal wellness in all aspects of life - bringing awareness of mental health, recovery, and wellness.
The She Speaks Wellness Network is a current recipient of three funders: Shared Gifting funds from the Central Texas Network Weavers with the St. David’s Foundation; Healthy Minds grant through the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health; and Columbia University Innovating Grant - She Speaks Hope for women’s clergy and leaders, in partnership with the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and Aiki Healing. Sonya was appointed Director of the Abundant LFE Community Development Corporation holistic wellness program.
She partners with Aiki Healing which.provides Aiki Healing’s founder Kay Hutchinson has created for She Speaks Wellness a holistic health consultation scholarship program. Individual women are mentored and coached regarding evidence-based, holistic wellness practices for 6 weeks to improve the health conditions that we typically see in our Black women clergy and church leaders. Women are taught the emotional, and physical reset tools that help bridge health disparities in our communities of color, including intentional breathwork, mindful movements and education about the role of diet and other lifestyle factors that impact health. Biblically-based mindfulness practices to reduce stress and foster a greater connection to God’s benevolence and healing are also included.
Sonya earned a Bachelor of Social Work from Sam Houston State University and worked for over 30 years in mental health and developmental disabilities. She studied at the Mary Hardin Baylor University Christian Education and Word of Faith International Ministry Bible School. Sonya served as grants specialist and director for more than 15 years at a state agency that provided oversight of $3.5 million annually.
